Which lock kit do I need for my van?

Our locking kits are universal to fit any van, any year, any make, any model, and any style door. One kit fits all.

How many locks do I need?

Each kit secures one entry point. For example, if you have an adventure van and are looking to secure all four entry points (two cab doors, side sliding door, and rear entry), you would need four lock kits. If you have a work van with a partition separating the cab from the cargo area, you would need two lock kits to secure the side and rear entry. IMPORTANT: When installing a lock in any front door, you should always install a Keyed Manual Release in case of battery or actuator failure.

Can I install the lock myself?

We always recommend having a professional up-fitter to tackle the installation; however, anyone who is handy and is confident with locating and connecting wiring can do it. Note: we have videos and information on our website to show the installation process, and we are here to answer questions; however, the Thunderbolt team is not obligated to assist in installing the locks.

Where can I find a professional to install the locks?

Visit our directory for a list of possible installers. Additionally, you can search your local area for any up-fitter, van builder, or auto security company, and they should be able to handle the installation.

Does Thunderbolt Locks perform installations?

Yes, we do, and we have customers from all over who drive to Chicago to have our team professionally install the Thunderbolt Locks at our sister company, Chicago Upfitters. www.ChicagoUpfitters.com

How long does an installation usually take?

On average, it should take about 2-3 hours per lock, including wiring. Front door locks usually take 3 hours per door, and rear and side doors take 2 hours per door.

Will the locks operate from my factory remote controller?

Yes. Once the locks are connected to the factory lock wires, they will mimic exactly what the factory locks do when pressing your factory remote controller. You can also choose to operate the Thunderbolt locks independently by purchasing the Thunderbolt remote control module kit and using our Thunderbolt remote controllers.

What if my van does not have a remote control system?

Our Thunderbolt remote control module kit can operate the locks. The module connects directly to any constant battery power, and then each Thunderbolt plugs into the module. The kit includes two remote controllers.

What if my battery fails, how do I get in my van?

If you only have Thunderbolts in your van's cargo area, you unlock your cab door with your key. If you have a bulkhead barrier and are locked out of your cargo area or have an adventure van with Thunderbolts on all four doors, then the following methods will pertain to you:

IMPORTANT: When installing a lock in any front door, you should always install a Keyed Manual Release in case of battery or actuator failure. The product can be found here. If you do not install a Keyed Manual Release, you risk being locked out of your van or may be subject to the difficult task of accessing the lock assembly while the door is closed. Removal of the door panel is challenging without the door in the open position.

1. Install a Thunderbolt keyed manual release.

2. Install a secondary hidden hood release cable under your van to access the battery.

3. Install a NOCO trickle charger to your battery with an AC plug port. Then connect a powered extension cord to power the battery.
